The English Longbowmen during the Hundred Years War

The English army was based on men-at-arms mounted ,infantry called pikemen or billmen and archers, these were the majority and the ratio was 1 to 3 coming from 1 to 4. There were also recruited others types such as scurrers who were a kind of light cavalry, Hobbies or hobins that were small and light horses, and used in reconnaissance missions, although they always fought foot to land as heavy infantry, were endowed with a pike or a bill (precursor of the halberd). Other recruits were the bidowers or Gascona light infantry, who were armed with javelins. With the passage of time only men of arms   and archers were employed.

The Longbowmen  : During the anglo norman invasions of Wales, archer soldiers took a heavy toll on the invaders using an extraordinary weapon of war.During the Welsh wars, the English suffered invaders using an extraordinary weapon of war.During the Welsh wars, the english suffered heavy casualties for this type of bow.The English quickly realized the impact of the long bow on the battlefield. As soon as the the Welsh campaign successfully concluded, the welsh recruits began to be incorporated into the English army. The lessons the English learned in Wales were later used with a deadly effect by mercenaries on the battlefields of France and Scotland. His skill was exercised under King Edward I of England (1239-
1307),who banned all sports saves Sunday archery to make sure it was practiced exclusively.

Types of Arrows:There were different kinds of arrows in there, arrows for piercing mail or plate armor, others to do more damage at diferent distances and in sometimes they used the incendiary arrows,to set on fire the foe #1) This type of arrow head could have been used with either the longbow or the crossbow. #2) The "Broad Head" was used on Longbow arrows. #3) This Longbow arrow head was particularly useful against horses.A manuscript of the 15th century which show us archers fighting on the English side,on the right, possibly welsh.

The equipment of the archers: Last phases of the war

Picture of an actual "Bodkin" Longbow arrow head used in Joan's time. This particular projectile was used to penetrate armor.

Mainly they were used to perforate the armors, the bodkin took a great variety of forms and measures. The bodkin of the needle took a slender and long shape, designed to penetrate into the mesh dimensions and was used early in the medieval period such as at the Battle of Poitiers.
Some references have been found some references on hollow needle bodkin, probably to slightly lighten their weight the back and end that is attached to the stem of the arrows would be hollow made by crushing the blacksmith the metal forming a cone of sheet that would later mold and Would close to make the crimp for the wood stem.

The Welsh Archers

The English used to hire Welsh men in the hundred years war,to fight as archers,as they had millennial techniques with the longbow, and their effectiveness their fame grew up very quickly among the english army.Welsh archers are credited with victories, mostly the victory of Crecy in 1346.A welsh archer doing the famous "archers salute"

They used to wear very basic helmets, anyway it was very varied the types of helmets, and depended on the archer,as much as he could afford the costs, this one here looks like a modern "cyclist helmet",its made of leather,it hasn't too much cover except for the upper skull, very versatile and practical against some light sharp weapon.
